Once again the GGs has pandered to the “never seen” picks they are trying to promote or are attempting to show Their sophistication and distain for the pulblic who supports what The Public loves, not the people that make the award decisions.
Office, 30 Rock, Californication, Mad Men, even Dexter are not seen by that many people. Office and the Rock are simply not fully and should bot wear the label, “sitcom”. The other three being paid-for cable stationshave an already made audience of a certain demographic that likes a particular type of show that has a paid for tv type formula – which is fine, but is not really in competition with regular cable and broadcast. (mad men excluded – it’s one regular cable). The awards shows did there best to ignore CSI with its enormous popularitly and QUALITY programing, actors, etc. They have given only one award to House, the best crafted, drafted and written – and popular – series on TV. Boston Legal was equally great in the comedy division and equally ignored in amount of awards.
opinion – many v ery fine movies this year, but one stands out as that “instant classic” that only occurs every 20 years or so. Slumdog Millionaire was the most exceptional film that I have seen in as any years. It is near perfect, in writing (it always starts with the writing), acting, direction, photography, set direction, tone, music and execution. It is outstanding among the many.
I hope the Acadey does not forget the 11 year old Roanian actress that was the finest child actress I have ever seen, giving a stunning performance in “The Fall”. Of c ourse, she probably doesn’t have many Hollywood connections and hasn’t learned playing politics. She was brilliant in a very fine film.
I wish the GG would give us, the public, a good show this year, by recognizing the viewer in its choices and give the award to shows that are actually seen, and not let the fact that Slumdog deals entirely with a different culture than ours interfer with them getting the award that is already owns.
