John Lennon’s Star Missing from Hollywood Walk of Fame

John Lennon’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is missing. The brass monument has been reported missing from the sidewalk at 1750 Vine Street where it was placed in tribute to the Beatles legend in 1988 – eight years after Lennon was gunned down outside his home in New York City.
According to LAist.com the asphalt has just an “empty outline of a star,” which has been covered up with a plastic bag and tape.
There is speculation that the plaque may have been stolen, damaged or removed to accommodate the addition of Lennon’s band mate Ringo Starr’s dedication, which is set for February.
The Beatles have a group star but Lennon was the first band member to receive a solo tribute. George Harrison received a posthumous honor in April.
UPDATE:
According to Ana Martinez of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Lennon’s star has NOT been stolen:
“No, the star of John Lennon has not been stolen!,” she wrote in an email. “The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce along with Capitol Records have moved the star of John Lennon next to the star of his friend George Harrison as a holiday gift to the community and fans of the Beatles. The star is still at the same address. And the star of Ringo Starr will also be at that same site, this coming Feb. 8, the 50th anniversary of the Walk of Fame. Happy Holidays!”
