New Artist Find: Zee Avi, Malaysian Singer/Songwriter

Hillary | Across the Nation, Celebrities, Music, Zee Avi | Friday, 28 August 2009

Zee Avi, a 23-year-old Malaysian singer/songwriter, has recently transformed a piece of the music business for us all.She brings us a “universal message” from the Malaysian island of Borneo, a natural paradise.

According to Avi, she was “bred to be a lawyer”, but as we later found out, music is in her family’s bloodline. Her grandfather on her dad’s side sang, played guitar, double bass, violin, and accordion.

At age 12, she moved to a town called Kuala Lumpur. When she turned 17, she started isolating herself and her guitar and learned to play countless number of songs. She then arrived in London, leaving the guitar gathering dust, to study fashion. When she returned, four years later, she rekindled the fire and joined a band, writing and performing her songs.

She then did what many singer/songwriters do lately, and posted her videos on YouTube. This began a huge following as soon as another singer/songwriter named Kris Rowley posted Avi’s videos on his page.

By her early twenties, Avi posted her “last song”, titled “No Christmas For Me”. When she returned later to her email, she had a couple thousand emails, as well as a few label offers.

Feeding America: Ashton Kutcher Helps Fight Hunger

Hillary | Across the Nation, Celebrities | Saturday, 06 June 2009

 ashtonhunger

Ashton Kutcher has started using social networking to get out a message about hunger to anyone who will listen. The 31-year-old actor has made big impressions before, being the first to make it to a million followers on the popular social networking site, Twitter.

Kutcher has been telling fellow tweeters to submit videos of themselves saying things like “No one should go hungry” or for them to go a day without eating then tweet about it. He then is going to take the individual videos submitted and make a compilation video about ending U.S. hunger. All of the videos are to be submitted to EndUsHunger@gmail.com. (They are still taking videos, feel free to help the cause.)

Kutcher speaks to individuals on Twitter as well, giving them ideas for the video. He tells one person,”How about a video speaking about what it was like to have to reach out a hand for food.” He also tells one tweeter that,”a video in sign language would be amazing.”

At this point, Kutcher has helped raise 10 million dollars worth of food through his effort. He says, “If people aren’t aware of this problem, they can’t fix it.” Kutcher plans on helping expand the campaign so that it not only has to do with U.S. hunger awareness but awareness around the world.

As to make sure donations go straight to the cause, Kutcher has been telling people that he will tell them where to donate money when the video is released.

Ashton’s Official Twitter can be found at http://twitter.com/aplusk. More information about this cause can be found at http://feedingamerica.org/.

marine corps birthday 2008

Happy Birthday Marines! On November 10, 1775,  the United States Marine Corps was founded at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For over two centuries Marines have defended our freedom and today is a celebration as well as recognition. Marines around the world will be celebrating the 233rd birthday by having cake, having a letter from General Legeune read (see the letter below), and attending their Battalion or Company Marine Corp Ball. The ball requires Marines to dress up in their Dress Blues Alphas, a uniform that requires them to wear the medals and ribbons they’ve earned.

Being married to one I associate Marines with excellence, the best of the best. To all those who are not able to partake in the activities because they are stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan, we thank you for your services.

McCain on Letterman

McCain on Letterman

John McCain appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night to apologize for his cancellation last month.

The Republican presidential nominee had called Letterman an hour and a half before showtime to tell the late night host he had to get right back to Washington. Instead, McCain sat in for an interview in New York with Katie Couric.

“I screwed up. What can I say?” the Arizona senator told Letterman on Thursday night’s show. There was, however, a silver lining, said McCain.

“Look at all the conversation I gave you,” he told Letterman.
